Mussel Recipes
Mussel recipes: prepare these tasty shellfishes cooking mussels the Italian way. In Italy it is very common to eat seafood during Summertime, more than in other periods of the year.
Mussels are often sold ready to be cooked, but sometimes they are sold just as they come from the sea. In this case, you should clean the shells to take away what may be attached to the shell. You can use a steel sponge (like the ones you use for your pans) to quickly clean up them.

Many people here in Italy love to eat raw mussels. It is forbidden by law and you will never (at least should not) raw mussels served at a restaurant. It is because it is risky as raw shellfish can cause you diseases, including hepatitis.
Researches state that only a few people become serioulsy ill eating raw shellfish like mussels, but it is probably because it is also difficult to record as hepatitis, for example, has an incubation period that can go from 10 days to 60 days. So, take care and prepare one of these cooked mussel recipes and you will have nothing to be afraid of.
