Italian fried food
Italian fried food; these less famous Italian foods are well represented in most Italian food menus and include many kid-friendly recipes.
My mother-in-law used to make vegetable fritters that are the best I’ve ever eaten. She used whatever vegetable she had available, such as cauliflower, eggplants or chard.
Fried ’calamari’ is the most popular seafood fry. It is better to use squid that is not too fresh as it tends to be tough. It is advisable to freeze it beforehand. Just toss in salted wheat flour and fry. Serve with lemon slices.
A friend of mine used to put French fries into the frying machine a little bit earlier and then added the ’calamari’ (as it cooks in less time than the potatoes). It becomes an exquisite mix that always ensures that there is nothing left on the plate!
In Rome, they used to serve a fried dish that included chunks of vegetables and cheese. Click here to learn how to do that.
Also in Rome there are the famous ’suplì’, round fried balls of rice and mozzarella, known as ’mozzarella in carrozza’.
As a sweet choice, there are the so-called ’ciambelle’ or ’fatti fritti’ (fried Italian bagels) that can be found in almost all bars as a breakfast pastry, or made at home to delight family and friends.
These bagels, together with zeppole and chiacchiere are typical candies used during Carnival in Italy.
