Italian coffee tips

If you have already read the page about Italian coffee , you already know how important a good coffee is for Italians!

But... if it's good, why not imitate them to have a good coffee?

A good coffee begins with a good blend. I like very much Arabica. A lot of people prefer it mixed with some Robusta, to render it stronger.

But it needs more...

What you need to make a good coffee

First of all: coffee needs a good "Moka" (traditional coffee maker) or an espresso machine. You cannot make a good coffee (intended as Italian type) using a coffee machine. It simply gives you another beverage.

A good Moka can be bought easily now. I looked around the web and found the Bialetti here (big size, makes 9 coffees) and this other one for 2 coffees each time. Remember to use an Italian coffee. I use Lavazza since I came to live here, as it is not so strong, but very tasty. If you don't know where to buy it, click here.

Another thing that makes the difference: the water. It seems quite stupid... but it's not. If you really want to have a real Italian coffee, why not buy some Italian mineral water? You can keep it only for the coffee!

Tips

• Another important thing: when you put your Moka on the gas, leave it open! Do not keep it closed because the condensed water would fall inside your coffee changing its taste.

• Last but not least, something that people often do not think about: how you wash your Moka. I know that coffee has some fat in it and that you feel like washing it with your normal kitchen soap.

Don't do that! Your coffee will always have a bitter taste.

Just as an example: I have a help at home, I mean, there's a lady that comes twice a week for cleaning. Well, I began to find my coffee tasting bitter and then, eureka! I decided to ask her if she was washing the Moka with soap. Guess what she answered me? Yes!

I have a steel sponge that I use to wash it (not only it, I use the sponge with the pans too!), always with no soap at all! Try it and you'll see how your coffee will be much better.

• If you have just bought a Moka, don't worry. You'll need to make some coffees before having a real good coffee. It is because even if steel seems to be a material that do not absorb smells and other... it does! The Moka needs to have the aroma fixed on it.

After all, the known Italian actor Nino Manfredi used to say in a Lavazza caffè advertising a great truth: "Il caffè dev'essere buono. Se no, che piacere è?" (=Coffee has to be good... otherwise, it's not a pleasure!).Italian espresso coffee
